Hire a CFO or Financial Controller?
Whether to use a Financial Controller or a CFO or Finance Director? Generally, a Financial Controller will report on the current and historic performance of a business. Familiar with accounting standards, reporting requirements such as GAAP and IFRS and taxation, a Financial Controller should be able to prepare a set of financial statements and provide clarity of the current situation. A Financial Controller should also be able to implement and improve internal controls.
A good CFO should be competent at handling the deliverables of the Financial Controller (notably financial reporting) and some. The CFO’s role is more forward looking, playing a leading role in strategy, commercial direction and generating ideas to grow a business and maximise the return on capital employed. Specifically, a CFO should add value in the following areas: preparation of KPIs, key performance indicators, forecasts; risk management; leadership and development of the finance function; integrity and ethics; an ability to think strategically; communication skills – and the ability to perform as a business partner with other business functions; international experience; leadership of IT (information technology) and processes, and most importantly, an ability to react to, and drive change in order to maximise the opportunities presented by the business environment.
